SKYFIBER Broadband Connectivity Success during Mexico City’s Recent Earthquakes
SKYFIBER’s Optical Wireless Broadband equipment showed remarkable resiliency during the recent earthquakes in Mexico City and surrounding area.

April 12, 2012
DALLAS, TEXAS - Over the past few weeks, Mexico City has experienced multiple earthquakes, including the 7.4 magnitude quake felt on March 20th, a 6.0 magnitude quake on April 2nd, and the recent Good Friday earthquake that clocked in at 4.4 on the Richter scale. All told, the increased seismic activity in the area has resulted in seven separate earthquakes at 4.2 or higher on the Richter scale over the last 3 weeks, and this has disrupted many aspects of telecommunications service across the Mexico City region. However, during these seismic events SkyFiber’s Optical Wireless Broadband links were remarkably resilient, during even the worst of the quakes.

SkyFiber, a global leader in Optical Wireless Broadband (OWB) technology, currently has 25 OWB links installed in Mexico City with customers Iusacell and TotalPlay. Optical Wireless Broadband (OWB) technology is the next-generation of Free Space Optics (FSO) technology, and it uses a beam of infrared light to wirelessly send 1 gigabit worth of data across 1.6-kilometer hops. SkyFiber has been providing Gigabit bandwidth links to Iusacell since 2009, and these recent earthquakes have confirmed the resiliency of the technology. Christina Richards, VP of Marketing & Business Development said, “The region was experiencing a lot of problems in other parts of their telecommunications networks as a result of the earthquake. We were very pleased to see that due to the excellent engineering and installation of the product, the SkyFiber equipment was able to withstand this scenario.”

Out of a total of 25 links installed in Mexico City, only 2 links experienced brief downtime, and 100% of the links were fully operational with 1 hour of the major 7.4 quake. Gerardo Gonzalez, SkyFiber’s CEO and President said, “Our current generation of SkyLINK products has a proprietary Active-Alignment feature that enables the units to retain beam alignment even during significant movement. Later this year, we will also add SkyTOWER to our portfolio, which integrates a Rapid Active-Alignment, and this will enable our product to withstand even greater structural movement, due to faster scan and alignment capabilities”.
